CHALLENGES FACED BY GSK: The environment in which the Consumer Healthcare business operates has become ever more challenging: consumers are demanding better quality, better value and improved performance retailers have consolidated and globalised which has strengthened their negotiation power Cycle times for innovation have reduced. The pharmaceutical industry is experiencing a time of unprecedented challenge. Patent expiries, regulatory issues and increased pressures from healthcare providers have combined to create an environment where pharmaceutical sector is associated with lower growth and higher risk. KEY CHALLENGES The patents on many medicines that have driven sales growth in our industry over the past decade are coming to an end. These medicines may not be replaced by products of equivalent financial size. In addition, there are increasing pressures on pharmaceutical companies to deliver products with demonstrable benefits over current treatments. No longer do we merely have to discover and develop products that help people do more, feel better and live longer. We now have to justify that our products represent the greatest value for healthcare providers. At the same time, the pharmaceutical sector has been exposed to controversy regarding ethical and patient safety issues. As an industry, we are in danger of eroding what trust we already have when we actually need to be building stronger relationships with governments, regulators and the general public. These factors have combined to move the industry from one which was expected to deliver high growth at low risk, to the very opposite. International Programme for HIV Education Positive Action Programme It is estimated that more than 36 million adults and children are living with HIV/AIDS with approximately 15,000 more people being infected each day. Globally, more than 21 million people have died from AIDS, resulting in 13.2 million orphaned children. Positive Action is GSKs international programme of HIV education, care and community support. In this, GSK works in partnership with individuals, community groups, healthcare providers, international agencies and others to encourage HIV prevention as well as education, care and treatment of people living with, or affected by HIV/AIDS. Since its inception in 1992, positive action supported and implemented a wide variety of projects at both national and international levels throughout the world. EARTHQUAKE RELIEF: In this time of need and despair, GSK Pakistan was very quick to respond to the calamity affected areas with Rs. 20 million worth of antibiotics, analgesics and topical anti-bacterial supplies, delivered within 24 hours of the disaster having struck. Carefully selected emergency treatment packages were developed by the Crisis Management Team established, and a donation of up to 350,000 doses of Hepatitis A vaccine was given to health authorities to cope with the arising health concerns in the wake of the earthquake. This was all delivered within 24 hours of the disaster due to the urgent medical need. PROGRAMMES AND OPPORTUNITIES TO ENCOURAGE ACTIVE EMPLOYEE INVOLVEMENT: GSK encourages employees to become involved with deserving causes in their local communities around the globe.   GSK support their time and dedication with various internal programmes and opportunities to encourage active employee involvement. The PULSE Volunteer Partnership Programme is the newest corporate responsibility initiative. Myopic little men in tuxedos, or highly efficient land/water animals? Recent research indicates there's more to penguins than meets the eye. If you've every wondered what it would be like to be able to see as clearly under water as you can on land, just ask the nearest penguin.Most aquatic animals are short-sighted on land. Most terrestrial animals (and that includes us) are far-sighted under water. But researchers have discovered that penguins can apparently see equally well in both environments, because of the unique structure of their eyes. Penguins have to be able to see well under water because their diet consists mainly of plankton, molluscs, crustaceans, and the inevitable fish. Through a special slowing-down of their heart rate they're able, like many other diving animals, to stay submerged long enough to search out and chase whatever catches their fancy. On dry land, it's a different story-or has been up to now. Waddling along on their flat little feet, eyes fixed intently on the ground, penguins appear myopic, inefficient and generally out of place. In fact the reverse is true. During a recent stay on the Falkland Islands, a Canadian researcher discovered that penguins are able to recognize individuals and navigate the rocky terrain on which they live quite well. Long of body and short of leg, they probably poke their heads forward as an aid to balance. And as for looking at the ground, they're merely-like us-keeping an eye on where they're going. The human eye is adapted for aerial vision, which is why scuba divers-or even you and I in the local swimming pool-must wear goggles or a face mask to re-introduce air in front of our eyes in order to see clearly. Hw Assignment #3: Two Trees 1) Continue organic growth in Dumbo – Rent vs. Sell? Walenta should continue organic growth in Dumbo. I believe that he should rent the space that he has this way he continues to have a foot in the neighborhood as it expands. As we know living in Manhattan has become very expensive and people are going right over the bridge to re-establish themselves and their business. It would be critical for Walenta to stay in Dumbo and continue to have an effect in the expansion of the neighborhood homes/businesses. 2) Develop a new neighborhood.I believe there is much potential in Red Hook and Walenta should develop a new neighborhood there. It has the same industrial/neighborhood feel that Dumbo has. This neighborhood has the potential to become like Dumbo and possibly even greater. The neighborhood is slightly larger than Dumbo and he would be able to buy and expand more. 3) Become partner in tenant's businesses. As a fall back he should decide to partner up with a couple of tenant’s businesses. As we know, the real estate industry has gone through many ups and downs in the last few decades.It is important for him to have something else to fall back on. The only thing he would have to consider is that if he decides to enter into these businesses if real estate does go down the businesses might slow down as well. 4) Encourage establishment of new businesses in Dumbo. Establishment of new businesses should be encouraged in Dumbo. It is definitally an up and coming neighborhood. People who don’t want to spend the money in the city look to come over the bridge to spend a little less and still have the same quality and feel.Also as more people move in the more new businesses are needy. I believe that another big reason people are coming to Brooklyn because it allows them to live the city life but also have a community feel, something that is hard to come by in NYC. NYC is very overcrowded and many of the neighborhoods donâ€⠄¢t have a community feel because of this. Brooklyn has the space and ability to make the neighborhood feel like a community. Small businesses will attract these city goers looking for a homey feel with the quality of life like that in the city.

New Orleans Public School Crisis â€Å"It began in 1960, but the seeds for it were planted in 1954 when the U.S Supreme Court ruled that racially segregated public schools were unconstitutional.†(Brown). The day 6-year-old Ruby Bridges walked through the doors of William Frantz Public School in New Orleans, Louisiana, she walked into the pages of history. Ruby was the first African American student at this previously all-white school on the 14th of November, 1960. This was the New Orleans Public School Crisis, and this was just the beginning of all the riots to come. The equality of Blacks and Whites was nonexistent, and social justice was poor because of the racial prejudices that stood in the way. Blacks were not allowed to have the same education as Whites; it wasn t expected of an African American woman to graduate from high school, let alone finish grade school in these times. The 1960’s were full of movements; whether it be a Hippie Movement or a Mexican American Movement, but the difference bet ween these movements and the Civil RIghts Movement for Blacks, is that African Americans are still unfortunately fighting for their equality and Rights.
